Museum

The Museum

The Zoology department at the University College of Science, Technology and Agricuture at Ballygunge Circular Road campus, Kolkata, is the proud owner of a heritage zoological museum with more than 5000 well preserved specimens of common as well as rare species of vertebrate and invertebrate fauna kept in excellent condition. There are also fine models of animal systems to render anatomical training to the student of Zoology.

The department has a rich heritage of eminent taxonomists and parasitologists and the privilege of being one of the finest collections of inventorized zoological specimens in India if not the world. This museum has acted as the nodal resource center for a lot of the under-graduate and post-graduate colleges and institutes as well as participated in outreach programs meant for school and high children to enhance awareness about our rich biodiversity. Exposure to preserved specimens introduces the post graduate student of Zoology towards specialization in bioprospecting as well as the sheer appreciation of evolution of body forms.

The Museum

A new state-of-the-art museum where a digital catalogue is maintained and animal displays according to phylogeny are exhibited, is being currently developed. Each phylogenetic tree shall have at least one typical and one atypical animal with detailed morphological and anatomical description and if possible, movie of how it behaves in its natural ecosystem. This museum shall have internet connectivity so latest information and cutting edge research may be brought to the students of vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, parasitology, immunology and evolution.
