Centre for South & South East Asian Studies
Research Work
There is a Centre for South & Southeast Asian Studies, under the aegis of the Department. The main objective, of this Centre, is to undertake and promote research on major socio-economic and politico- administrative issues in Myanmar, Thailand & Bangladesh. However it examines regional issues of common concern to all countries in South and Southeast Asia. It has a further aim of collecting and disseminating research data and information based on co-sharing among sister organizations. Along with this the Centre organize, from time to time, seminars and conferences on important themes related to different aspects of development in the countries of the region. As a further measure to promote a fruitful exchange of ideas, it invites visiting scholars working in similar fields from other academic institutions both in India and abroad.
Language Programme of the Centre
The Centre for South & S.E Asian Studies has facilities for providing basic instructions in Asian Languages. At present, we have arrangements for Thai and Burmese language teaching.
Publications of the Department / Centre
The Department has brought out a journal on Asian Studies under the title Prachya. The second volume of the journal is at present under preparation. The Department has published a book entitled Girls in the Twilight Zone ( University of Calcutta Press, 2003 ) under the joint editorship of Dr. Lipi Ghosh and Dr. Paula Banerjee.
The Faculty Members have also participated in the UGC sponsored publication programme of Centre for South & S.E Asian Studies. Under this program Prof Asish Kumar Ray has his book named Praetorian Politics in Bangladesh (Calcutta: 2002), Buddhadeb Chaudhuri’s book is Health, Forest and Development: The Tribal Situation (New Delhi: 2003) Dr. Rajagopal Dhar Chakraborti’s book is The Greying of India: Population Ageing in the Context of Asia (New Delhi: 2004), Dr. Swapna Bhattacharya Chakraborty has utilised this fund to publish her book entitled India-Myanmar Relations 1886-1948 (Calcutta: expected publication 2006) & Dr. Lipi Ghosh’s publication is Prostitution in Thailand: Myth & Reality (New Delhi: 2002)
