HISTORY

 

HISTORY

University of Calcutta as being the first University in India was introduced Pali as an independent subject at the Post–graduate level and the Department of Pali was established in the year of 1907.The Department was set up in an organized form in 1917.

 

THURST AREA OF THE DEPARTMENT

This department is engaged since its establishment to spread and development of Pali Language and various research projects under the guidance of Faculty members and distinguished Scholars. The department offers M.Phil, Post graduate degree and various short term courses.

 

CURRENT ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PALI:

Principle activities are highlighted that the Department of Pali organized-- International Seminar on ‘Role of Pali-in the perspective of International Peace &Humanity (on the eve of Centenary celebration of the deptt.),

National Seminar on Buddhism & Ambedkar (on the eve of Buddha jayanti celebration of the deptt.).


Research projects under U.P.E scheme:

1. Buddhist Education in India (Title of the project) by Prof.Dr.Bela Bhattacharya;

2. Buddhism in Iran & Afghanistan through the ages (Title of the project) by Dr.Manikuntala Haldar (De).

Students of the Deptt.are successfully qualified the NET exam organized by the U.G.C. & NAAC team appreciated the activities of the deptt.

The Deptt.has upgrated its entire syllabus which help to the competitors of the West Bengal Civil Service Exam & Indian Administrative Service Exam.
