1. Recognized by the University Grants Commission as a Centre of Advanced Study since 1963.
The status has been extended till March 31, 2010.

2. S.K. Mitra Center for Research in Space Environment established in the Department in 2002.

Collaborative research programs exist between the departmental staff and scientists / faculties in Institute of Scientific Research, Boston College and Centre for Space Physics, Boston University, USA, Lawrence Berkley Lab., USA, Royal Military College, Kingston and McMaster University, Hamilton, CANADA, Rutherford Appleton Lab., University of Bath, UK, University of Valencia, SPAIN and many institutions / organizations in India.
4. The institute holds an International conference "Computers and Devices for Communication (CODEC)” biannually. The CODEC - 06 will be held in Hyatt Regency, Kolkata, during December 18-20, 2006.
