Research Work

Major thrust areas in which Research activities are being actively pursued :

Prof. B. R. Maiti : Role of arecoline on the endocrine gonadal functions in rats. Role of lithium in circadian rhythms on pineal and other endocrine organs of rats. In vitro study of gonadal hormones on ovarian activity in fish.
Prof. S. G. Pal : Study of blood cells (hemocytes) of edible bivalved molluscs at a microscopical and cytochemical level, in order to determine the exact role of these cells in the event of deteriorating water quality.
Prof. P. Lahiri : Studies on environmental health related to vehicular pollution in megacities of India, with special reference to children and women. Reproductive toxicity of insecticides in non-target animals. Causes of decline of Bengal vulture and conservation of biodiversity in wetlands.
Prof. D. Raychaudhuri : Biodiversity and bioresource assessment of forest insects and spiders. Taxonomy and phylogeny of forest insects and spiders. Bioeconogy of timber borers and their management.
Prof. B. Manna : Study of carbohydrate metabolism and nature of pigment development in intermediate hosts of Trematodes. Characterization of cestode parasites of cartilaginous fishes of the Bay of Bengal at West Bengal coasts.
Prof. R. N. Chatterjee : Search for new genes of Drosophila melanogaster which help in organization and development of sexual dimorphism in Drosophila. In addition, to isolate novel autosomal or X-chromosomal genes which help to organize the X-chromosomes for regulation of dosage compensation in Drosophila.
Prof. S. B. Banerjee : Production of transgenic tilapia species and experimentation on intensive culture in non-traditional rareways system for mass production of low cost animal protein. Assessment of pollution in wastefed wetlands and Ganga river system and monitoring through use of bioindicator species.
Prof. S. Chakraborty : Work has been envisaged to look into the cytophysiology of the pineal, thyroid and uropygial gland activities in neonatal chicks and in albino rats. Assays of respective hormones under diverse endocrine alterations.
Dr. S. Homechoudhuri : Study of genetic variations within cultivable and ornamental fishes. Analysis of reproductive failure of threatened fish and suppression of fish immune responses due to environmental toxins. Documentation of aquatic biodiversity in relation to environmental heterogeneity and impact on ecosystem stability.
Dr. G. K. Saha : Investigation of the bio-ecological status of malaria vectors of India and characterization of the clinical, immunological and entomological aspects of dust mite allergy.
Dr. S. Ray : Study of environmental risks to edible molluscs, in order to determine the decrease in population of aquatic invertebrates. Characterization of immunocompetent cells, specially hemocytes, for surface epitopes, under exposure to specific agrotoxins.
Dr. M. Das : Study of the effects of hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis on other organs in rats. DNA analysis of people affected with oculocutaneous albinism in order to predispose the incidence of the disease.
Dr. U. Chatterji : Investigation of the effects of environmental pollutants on cancer and ageing in rats and humans (with the use of human cell lines) and characterization of natural products as anti-cancer agents.
