Inauguration of the IPR Cell (on 22nd March, 2024) [Click here for Details]
The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell, RUSA 2.0 & DSTBT, of the University of Calcutta was established on 22nd March, 2024 at Centenary Building (7th floor), Ashutosh Siksha Prangan (College Street Campus), 87/1, College Street, Kolkata – 700073. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Debasis Das, Hon'ble Registrar, University of Calcutta.
The programme started with felicitation of The Hon’ble Registrar, followed by wateringofplants. Faculties and guests were then invited to join the ribbon-cutting ceremony at IPR Cell, 7th floor, Centenary Building, University of Calcutta. had organized the One Day workshop on “Fundamentals of IPR: Fostering Innovation Ecosystem” on 22nd March, 2024 from 12:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. at Centenary Building (8th floor), Ashutosh Siksha Prangan (College Street Campus), 87/1, College Street, Kolkata –700073. The programme received financial support from RUSA 2.0 and DSTBT.
This was the first event to mark the journey of intellectual protection to be facilitated via the newly established IPR Cell of the University. The primary mission of IPR Cell in the University of Calcutta will be IP awareness, IP training, capacity building for IP strategy and advanced research, which will gradually offer academic programmes in the years to come.
It aims to motivate and guide the inventors starting from the innovation process to the application to the granting of patent, applying to registration for copyright, trademark, industrial design, integrated circuits (IC), database, and Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR). IPR cell also intends to develop well-defined IPR policy in the University of Calcutta to facilitate in technology transfer and further commercialization of the patent product.
First One Day Workshop on Fundamentals of IPR : Fostering Innovation Ecosystem (on 22nd March, 2024) at College Street Campus, University of Calcutta [Click here for Details]
The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell, RUSA 2.0 & DSTBT, of the University of Calcutta had organized the One Day workshop on “Fundamentals of IPR: Fostering Innovation Ecosystem” on 22nd March, 2024 from 12:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. at Centenary Building (8th floor), Ashutosh Siksha Prangan (College Street Campus), 87/1, College Street, Kolkata –700073. The programme received financial support from RUSA 2.0 and DSTBT. This was the first workshop of its kind organized by the IPR Cell to mark the journey of intellectual protection to be facilitated via the newly established IPR Cell of the University. The workshop aimed to raise awareness regarding Intellectual Property Rightsand to promote its importance, knowledge and practical concepts among the stakeholders of the University, specially the faculty members. Faculty members of the University across discipline were invited for the same.
The programme was inaugurated by Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) DebasisDas, Hon’ble Registrar, University of Calcutta. Prof. (Dr.) Susmita Neogi, Dean, Faculty Council for Post Graduate Studies in Fine Arts, Music, and Home Science, and Prof. Biplab Chakrabarti, Dean, Faculty Council for Post Graduate Studies in Education, Journalism, Library and Information Science, and Prof. (Dr.) Sabuj Kumar Chaudhuri, Founder-Coordinator, IPR Cell spoke a few words on the importance of intellectual property and establishment of the new IPR Cell at the University. All the chief patrons and eminent speakers were felicitated at the beginning of the programme.
Eminent speakers Dr. Mahuya Hom Choudhury, Scientist-C, Nodal Officer, Patent Information Centre, WBSCST, DSTBT, Govt. of WB and Dr. Susil Kumar Mitra, Ex- Deputy Controller of Patents & Designs, Patent Office, Govt. of India graced the occasion with their enlightening lectures on intellectual properties. Basic principles of intellectual properties, rights and laws, current scenario in the nation and other important aspects related to protection of the IP were discussed during the lectures.
The lectures were followed by question-answer and photography sessions where the faculties and research scholars participated.
Second IP Workshop on Patents: From Innovation to Commercialization (on 30th September, 2024) at Ballygunge Science College Campus, University of Calcutta [Click here for Details]
The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell, RUSA 2.0 & DSTBT, of the University of Calcutta had organized the IP workshop on “Patents:From Innovation to Commercialization” on 30th September, 2024 from 11:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. at L.K. Ananthakrishna Iyer Hall, Dept. of Anthropology, Taraknath Palit Siksha Prangan (Ballygunge Science College Campus), 35, Ballygunge Circular Road, Ballygunge, Kolkata 700019. The programme received financial support from RUSA 2.0 and DSTBT. The IP workshop aimed to raise awareness regarding Intellectual Property Rights and to promote its importance, knowledge and practical concepts among the stakeholders of the University, specially the faculty members and research scholars. Faculty members of the University across discipline were invited for the same. Research scholars were urged to confirm participation via an online registration link. Invitation cards and posters were already sent to individual departments of Ballygunge Science College Campus several days in advance.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Diptendu Chatterjee, Deputy Registrar, Dr. Subhamay Kisku, Coordinator, RUSA 2.0 and Prof. (Dr.) Sabuj Kumar Chaudhuri, Founder-Coordinator, IPR Cell. All the chief patrons and eminent speakers were felicitated at the beginning of the programme.
Eminent speakers Shri Lokesh Sisodiya, Assistant Controller of Patents & Designs, Govt. of India and Shri Shilbhadra Mukherji, External Member of IPR Committee, University of Calcutta graced the occasion with their enlightening lecture on application and commercialization of patents. Apart from this, Prof. (Dr.) Sabuj Kumar Chaudhuri, Founder-Coordinator of IPR Cell, University of Calcutta also delivered a lecture on the agenda and functioning of IPR Cell along with practical guidance. Actionable guidance was provided to the audience on the steps to be taken for filing a patent, from invention disclosure to granting of patent. Necessary details were shared with the audience for future reference.
The lectures were followed by question-answer and brain-storming sessions where the faculties and research scholars participated equally. The programme received recognition from the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) launched by the Government of India on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of independence under the banner "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" tocreate widespread awareness on IPR.
Third IP workshop on “Patents, Designs & Technology Management” (on 26th March, 2025) at Rajabazar Science College Campus, University of Calcutta [Click here for Details]
The third IP Workshop was conducted by the Coordinator and Team of IPR Cell, University of Calcutta, with financial assistance from RUSA 2.0 & DSTBT. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Debasis Das, Hon’ble Registrar, University of Calcutta. Prof. (Dr.) Sabuj Kumar Chaudhuri, Coordinator, IPR Cell, delivered the welcome address and introductory speech. Dr. Subhamay Kisku, Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, RUSA 2.0, Shri Jyotirmoy Roy, Deputy Registrar (BCW), Dr. Amit Ray, Secretary, Faculty Council for Postgraduate Studies in Science, Engineering & Technology and Agriculture & Veterinary Science (UCSTA), Dr. Sk Nausad Kabir, Assistant University Librarian, Dr. Subal Kumar Barui, Deputy Inspector of Colleges (Acting) and Director of Board of Residence (Acting), Shri Debabrata Manna, Deputy Librarian, Dr. Dipak Kumar Bara Panda, Curator, Shri Subhasish Sanyal, University Engineer, and Shri Krishnenedu Mukherjee, Placement Officer, graced the occasion with their presence. All the chief patrons and eminent speakers were felicitated at the beginning of the programme.
Faculty members of the University across discipline were invited for the same. Research scholars were urged to confirm participation via an online registration link. Faculties and scholars of individual departments of Rajabazar Science College Campus were invited several days in advance using the hardcopy of the invitation cards and programme schedule. Apart from this, email invitations and registration links were sent to all faculty members. The participants also received notebook, pen, bag and programme schedule.
The horizon of creativity and innovation and its legal protecting tools (IPR) is not just limited to science and technology, but extends to all faculties in the university, such as social sciences, commerce and management, science, technology, agriculture and other schools. Mission of the IPR Cell is to “Create, Protect & Foster”. IP awareness, training, capacity building for strategy and advanced research fall under the scope of the Cell. This also considers the importance of university-wide campaign for scouting innovations and motivating all creators.
The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Susil Kumar Mitra, Ex-Deputy Controller of Patents & Designs, Patent Office, Govt. of India. He started off with an overview of the basics of Intellectual property. He further discussed about the importance of IP associated with any invention, types of IP, the process from innovation to publication, forms to be complied with while filing the patent, patentable inventions and non-patentable inventions. He also touched upon the technology aspects and advancement made over years. The second lecture was delivered Prof. Sabuj Kumar Chaudhuri, Coordinator, IPR Cell, on the agenda and functioning of the IPR Cell. He talked about the importance of protecting IP, its awareness among the University fraternity, from invention disclosure to granting of patents. Necessary details were shared with the audience for future reference. This was followed by a short video presentation from Dr. Mahuya Hom Choudhury, Scientist-C, Nodal Officer, Patent Information Centre, WBSCST, DSTBT, Govt. of WB. Finally, Shri Shilbhadra Mukherji,
External member, IPR Committee, University of Calcutta delivered a lecture on the grounds of commercialization of an innovation. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks and packed food arrangement.
