History

History of the department : The MPhil in Clinical Psychology course of University of Calcutta started in 2005 after obtaining necessary approval from Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), a Central Government statutory body, and continued to impact student training and community welfare for a decade. The need to expand the scope of clinical psychology beyond the said course as well to provide training in a more efficient manner with improved infrastructural facilities gave birth to the idea of an independent Centre.

Thus, the Clinical Psychology Centre of University of Calcutta was established as an independent Centre of University of Calcutta in 2015-2016. The course was governed by an independent committee headed by the then Dean of Science, University of Calcutta. The members comprised faculty members from Department of Psychology & Dept of Applied Psychology who had completed MPhil in Clinical Psychology and were  Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registered clinical psychologists as well as external experts.

The centre serves as a tertiary mental health care unit aimed at promoting mental health by providing high quality mental health care through a multidisciplinary approach and also facilitating the development of future group of Clinical Psychologists through formal training programmes and expanding scientific knowledge and its application through frontline research. This centre is dedicated to conduct diagnostic psychometric assessments and providing scientific evidence based psychotherapeutic services to individuals referred from various Government hospital set up and from private centres.

The Centre provides free of cost services to all beneficiaries of the society. This includes helping individuals from all sections of the society with assessment and therapy for academic purposes and disability certification, behavioural problems of children and adolescents, family, relationships and occupation related issues of adults, psychiatric problems of the adults and elderly as well as those with relevance to the forensic and correctional system and judiciary. The mission of this centre is to provide high quality mental health services to different sections of the population, adhering to evidence-based practices as well as practices that are novel, ethical and adaptive. It also plays a major role in the development of human resource and conducting research of high standard. While accomplishing these missions, it integrates the diverse value systems and prevailing human rights.
